About

Every year, the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain submits a single film to the Academy Awards for consideration for the Best International Feature Film award. Although not every submitted film garners an actual nomination or wins the Oscar, they all represent high achievement in Spanish cinema. This fall, as the Meadows Museum celebrates American enthusiasm for Spain in the exhibition Spanish Light: Sorolla in American Collections, we are proud to collaborate with Dallas Film to present a selection of Spanish films that were considered for an Academy Award.

In this retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, a matador’s daughter flees from her wicked stepmother and joins a traveling band of bullfighting dwarfs. She adopts the name Blancanieves and mesmerizes crowds with her talent and beauty in the arena. Set in a romantic vision of 1920s Andalusia, Blancanieves is a tribute to silent films. It was also Spain’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for 2012.

Silent film | 104 minutes
Rated PG-13 for some violent content and sexuality
